A Season of Transition in Our Diocese

The Diocese of Western North Carolina has entered a season of transition. Our bishop, the Rt. Rev. José McLoughlin, has announced his resignation in order to assume an important role assisting the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church. We give thanks for his faithful episcopal ministry among us, and we begin, as a diocese, the prayerful work of searching for a new bishop.

I’m pleased to share that our own Amy Peterson has been named to the search committee. In the coming months, you will hear more about the search process and will be invited to offer your feedback about what is important to consider as we discern who will next lead our diocese. Trinity Church plays a vital role in the overall life and witness of the Diocese of Western North Carolina. Your voice is needed—and it is welcomed.

A few practical notes about the transition itself: the diocese will not be calling an interim bishop. Instead, the Standing Committee of the Diocese will assume the ecclesiastical authority of our diocese during the search. An Assisting Bishop will be hired to conduct sacramental ministry, such as confirmations. As a result, in 2027 our confirmation service will likely be combined with those of other Asheville-area Episcopal congregations—a wonderful

opportunity to celebrate alongside our neighbors in the faith.
