At Trinity, formation is not one program among many. It is how our mission takes root in real lives — in children learning the shape of a story older than they are, in youth asking hard questions in the company of people who won’t flinch, in adults discovering that faith has more room in it than they were told.

 

Our theme this year in Adult Formation is A Little Leaven, from the parable in which the kingdom of heaven is likened to a bit of yeast worked quietly through the whole of the dough. It is a fitting image. Formation is rarely dramatic. It is small, hidden, patient work — and it changes everything it touches.

 

Everything we do here begins with an invitation: Explore Faith. We do not gather to go looking for a distant God, as though the Holy One were hidden beyond our ordinary days and might be located with enough study or effort. We gather because God is already here — living, active, and at work in our lives and in the world around us — and because attention is something we have to learn. Formation is the slow, joyful practice of learning to see what is already true. Seeing God draws us deeper into relationship with God and one another, and sends us back into the world expecting a difference and prepared to make one.
