Wrestling With Angels - An intimate look at the tough questions of life.

Developed by Trinity Church, NYC, this video/discussion series is a composite of personal stories from people around the country, relating questions and struggles with everyday life experiences. In compelling conversations, well-known authors reflect on the elements shared as they point toward new processes, rather than just more easy answers. Authors are: Tony Campolo, Philip Yancey, Richard Foster, Lewis Smedes, Madeleine L'Engle and Keith Miller.

Fr. Ham Fuller will facilitate discussion of class participants following the viewing of each presentation.

Women’s Brunch
Trinity Women; we are going to Sunday Brunch! Once a month, after church, we will Brunch together at one of our favorite Asheville Restaurants. This is open to any and all women of the parish. We will begin the first Sunday in May and continue on the first Sundays through the summer.

Our first Brunch will be at the Deer Park Restaurant on the Biltmore Estate. It is very important that we have an idea of how many will be attending, so please sign up on the activities sheet at the reception desk, or contact Barbara Berry at 274-4308 or by e-mail.

We are looking forward to this time of fun and fellowship with the Women of Trinity. Hope you will join us!

Men's Bible Class - This class meets at 7:30 am in the Clark Room, ending no later than 8:30.

All men are invited to join the group. It begins with Morning Prayer and then studies one of the lessons for the upcoming Sunday, or some other topic the group decides to pursue.

Led by The Rev. Ingram Parmley, the Bible study utilizes both traditional approaches to scripture and the insights of modern scholarship. Thus, participants are exposed to a truly Anglican approach to biblical understanding, calling into play all three legs of the "three cornered stool of Anglicanism": scripture, tradition, and reason. Coffee and snacks will be available.

ROOM IN THE INN  - MAY 18 – 24  This year, Trinity and Central Methodist are hosting Room In The Inn one week in each of the four seasons.  Our spring week is May 18 to 24th and the location is here at Trinity.

RITI started in Asheville in 2000 and was modeled after the first RITI program begun in 1986 in Nashville. About 30 churches in the Asheville area provide housing, meals, and transportation (one week at a time, about 3 or 4 times a year) for a maximum of twelve homeless women. The church volunteers work in teams and may choose to prepare dinners, fix bag lunches, or spend a night.

The Coordinator of RITI, who works with other programs serving the homeless, carefully screens the women for RITI and last year obtained a grant from the Community Foundation to help the RITI women obtain permanent housing.

We invite everyone--our experienced, faithful RITI volunteers to continue their caring, remarkable service; and, especially any other parishioners who want to become involved in helping those in need.

We look forward to this special week in which we and the Methodists offer “Church Street hospitality” to a maximum of twelve homeless women for seven nights, including dinner, breakfast, and boxed lunches.  Please check your calendars and consider this fine opportunity for service and fellowship.  Call us is you have any questions.  Many thanks!

Janet Kelly (274-3295) and Linda Hemstreet (777-6899)

Parents in Conversation - April 6-May 18 - Positive Discipline led by Genevieve Fortuna, certified Parent Coach and Educator

Do you yearn for a greater sense of cooperation and mutual respect in your family?  Are you baffled about how to effectively discipline your children? Would you like to spend less time in power struggles, nagging, and punishing?  If so, this course is for you.

Based on the best-selling book, Positive Discipline, by Jane Nelson, this program helps parents teach their children important life skills in a manner that is respectful of both parents and children. It offers deep wisdom and practical guidance, in the context of faith, to help raise children and teens to be responsible, respectful and resourceful members of their community.

Books will be available for purchase before the course begins. Parents in Conversation is a class focused on issues of interest to families, but open to everyone Sundays at 9:30 in the Clark Room.

For more information, contact the Rev. Carol Hubbard by

GET READY FOR VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL!
This year Trinity is doing something different! As many of you know, we have had a wonderful and successful VBS here at Trinity for 5 years. We are joining with SIX other churches in the terrific VBS that they have been doing together for the past ten years called MARKETPLACE 29 A.D. Many of you are very familiar with this program and your children have attended it as well. It is held just across the street at FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH. We are joining with All Souls, Grace Episcopal, Grace Covenant Presbyterian, Circle of Mercy and St. Mary’s Episcopal in this venture!

Marketplace is a joyful experience that invites our young to journey as members of one of the 12 tribes of Israel through the lively setting of a Judean town market set in the time of Jesus’ ministry. Our 2008 theme is “LOST AND FOUND.”

The dates are JUNE 23-26 FROM 9-12 A.M.!!!!! MARK YOUR CALENDARS NOW! This wonderful event is for children ages 3 (by January 2008 and potty trained) through 5th grade. We will need many adult, middle school and high school volunteers!

Trinity will only have enough spaces for 20 children, so register now! Registration forms will be available at Coffee Hour every Sunday from now through May 15th. Adults and youth can sign up to volunteer then as well. I already have several folks that have made the commitment and I hope more of you will take advantage of this special way to be a part of the fun and excitement!

KEEP ON THE LOOKOUT FOR MORE INFO, BULLETIN BOARDS, ETC.

Thanks so much,
Beth Chestnut

Tithes and Offerings - The tithes and offerings of all who worship at Trinity Church support its mission and outreach activities and allow us to do God’s work in the world. Please consider contributing to further that work by making a financial pledge to our parish. You can contact Betsy Edmonds, our financial assistant, at 253-9361 or by email for more information or to receive pledge envelopes.

Disciple Bible Study - An Invitation to the New Testament.  January 13 - May 18, 2008. This is a continuation of the course offered in the fall, An Invitation to the Old Testament, but the fall course is not a prerequisite. Learn more >>>

Thoughts on Stewardship - In the Prayers of the People, Rite One, there is a petition which says, "Open, O Lord, the eyes of all people to behold thy gracious hand in all thy works, that, rejoicing in thy whole creation, they may honor thee with their substance, and be faithful stewards of thy bounty." I couldn't help but think of this prayer as I reflected on Bill's sermon on the healing of the blind man at the Pool of Siloam.

We were encouraged to recognize the extraordinary grace offered to this man who by faith washed his mud-packed eyes and for the first time in his life could see. Even more wonderfully, we hear in his responses to the questioning crowd a vision which sees beyond the visual world around him. He sees the hand of God in this special work. A miracle, yes, but more, much more than just seeing. It is the recognition of the presence of God within the whole of creation and, wonder of wonders, he is a part of that new creation. His heart is full of joy, and he gives praise to the Giver of this amazing grace. What does he then do? He begins to proclaim that his "new sight" comes from God, and that he believes Jesus is the Messiah.

As with all scripture, we are invited to hear in the Word the personal invitation God gives to each of us. From this story in the Gospel of John, You and I are encouraged to wash our own mud-packed eyes and see anew. With this new vision we are enabled to see God's work in the whole of creation, even within ourselves, and with grateful hearts honor the source of such goodness, while being faithful stewards of the bounty which is provided.

I have always believed that this prayer is one of the best stewardship prayers in the Prayer Book.  It reminds us of the incredible bounty of God's love and mercy. It reminds us of the faith which  participates in the healing of our sight. It reminds us of the ease with which we can joyfully give thanks, offering all that we are: our time, talent and treasure, our ministries at Trinity and, through the church to the world, our witness to His love.  Try personalizing this prayer. "Open, O Lord, my eyes to behold your gracious hand in all your works, that rejoicing in your creation, I may honor you with my substance, and be a faithful steward of your bounty." Amen.

Yours in Christ, Ham+

2008 Outreach Committee Update and Funding Changes

In an effort to ensure that we meet the funding desires of the parish and the needs of the community, the Outreach Committee has decided to change its method for distributing funds. We are asking agencies to apply for funding by filling out the Trinity Outreach Funding Application. Those agencies who received gifts from Trinity in 2007 have been contacted regarding this change in policy and the applications have been given to them.

But we need your help. Are you involved with an organization that would benefit from a financial gift from Trinity Church? If so, the funding applications are available. Click the icon below or in the right column of links on this page or on the Ministries page. We have set a deadline for the agencies of March 15, 2008.

One of the 2008 goals of the Outreach Committee is to have the congregation more involved in and aware of the funding decisions we make. Please use this opportunity to alert your favorite non-profit to the possibility of Trinity’s Outreach funds and how the organization can apply for these gifts. The next Outreach Committee meeting will be on Tuesday, February 19, at 7:00pm at the home of Mary Parker, 95 Charlotte Street. All are invited to attend.

Susan Haldane, Chair
Trinity Outreach Committee

New to our Parish?

First of all, let’s say welcome to Trinity Church. We hope that you will find our church to be a place of spiritual growth and comfort in the years ahead. We also want to be sure that we have fully welcomed you into the community. More than likely, we already have your mailing address or you wouldn’t be receiving this newsletter. However, there are some other items we want to be sure to mention to you. Listed below is a short checklist of things you might want to consider.

In addition to your address, do we have your home and work phone numbers, e-mail addresses and fax numbers?  We would like to include this information in our new parish directory that will soon be published.  Do we have your birthday and anniversary dates, if you are married, so that we can include them on our list?  Both of the above can be given to us by either completing a parish information sheet or e-mailing Mary Summersette.

If you have children between the ages of eight and high school, we would love for them to participate in our Acolyte program. We have over 60 young people in our program and en-courage all young people to be a part of this experience. Simply e-mail Alastair Odom, our acolyte master and let her know your children would like to participate.

You may also see a ministry you wish to participate in yourself. It may be serving as a chalice bearer, or a lector or usher for our services. It could be volunteering to help with breakfast or Sunday school or one of our many other groups. Just let us know and we will put you in touch with the correct person. Email us and we will follow up.  You can also find a list of ministries and contacts on the Ministries page.

We encourage each of our new members also to offer their financial support to the parish. If you have not yet made a pledge and wish to do so, contact Betsy Edmonds.

If you have been a member of another parish and would like officially to transfer your membership, e-mail Jane Coxe  and she will handle the paperwork for you.

Once again, welcome! We are glad you are here at Trinity Church!

Vision Statement
"Trinity Church is a nurturing Christian community
providing opportunities for worship, spiritual growth and commitment
in a supportive and open atmosphere."

Bad Weather Policy

In case of heavy snow, ice, sleet or any other calamity that might befall us on a Sunday morning, know that our policy is that the 8:00 AM service, all Christian education programs and the breakfast are cancelled. However, the 10:45 AM service will go on as scheduled. That’s when we will be reminded of John Chrysostom’s prayer…”when two or three are gathered together your name.” I would caution all of you, though, to use great care in attempting to make it to church in bad weather and not take any undue risks to your safety.
