Valentines at Trinity: Carlyn and David Pheil

Every couple has a story — a story of how they met, how they’ve grown together, and how God has shaped their journey along the way. This Valentine’s season, we’re sharing a few of those stories from our church family. From chance meetings to lasting love, each one is a reminder that God’s timing and creativity are beautiful.

Today, we hear from Carlyn and David Pheil:

How did you two meet?

We first met at a symphony concert in the park in St. Petersburg, Florida. Carlyn was with friends when David walked by with a cooler of beer on his shoulder. As David likes to say, "the rest is history!"

How long have you been together?

We have been together 43 years and married almost 42. We were married on August 3, 1982. We had two priests marry us, as I was attending a Lutheran Church and David an Episcopal Church. We would attend my church one Sunday and his the next. When we decided to get married, we agreed to only attend the Episcopal Church, as we lived in David's hometown and this had been his church his entire life. A few years later I was confirmed Episcopalian.

What first drew you to each other?

When mutual friends introduced us, we were instantly drawn to each other. Carlyn grew up in southern California, spending a lot of time at the beach and the local mountains. David grew up in St. Petersburg and spent summers in Waynesville, enjoying sailing and the mountains as well. We both studied the piano, played sports, went to summer camp, and were involved in our church. Having each experienced divorce, we knew sharing our faith was key to our marriage.

What do you enjoy doing together these days?

We are committed to everything involved with maintaining good health in order to continue the activities we enjoy - playing golf, active traveling, volunteering at Trinity and Lake Logan, supporting the arts, reading, and of course being with friends and family.

What brought you to Trinity, and what keeps you connected here?

When we purchased 76 Gertrude Place in north Asheville, it had been the rectory for Trinity. While still in our first week of unpacking, Ernestine Tuton came knocking at our back door and said, "Who is living in my house?!" Then she asked if we were Episcopalians and that's the end of the story!

Trinity is hard to explain to those who have never been here. It's everything a community of faith is called to be. The message of who we are as followers of Christ is why we are here. Worshiping together, enjoying fellowship together, and participating in inreach and outreach opportunities continues to help us grow.

What’s a favorite memory you’ve made as a couple?

Our first few dates took place out on the waters of Tampa Bay, sailing with friends. Carlyn's parents came to meet David and we took her dad out. There was a moment when the wind stilled. Carlyn and her dad got up on the boom, leaning back into the sail. Her dad had this look of pure bliss, not only for himself but for us.

What’s something simple that always makes you feel connected?

Staying connected for us sometimes means being intentional about planning something a bit out of our ordinary day - like an afternoon cup of tea at a unique spot, driving along the Blue Ridge Parkway, perusing downtown mid week mid winter discovering new shops, and having friends over to share a meal.

What are you looking forward to in this next season of life together?

As for the next season of life - more of the same please!
