Ministries

The strength of a church is definitely not confined to Sunday worship. As much prayerful work goes on outside the nave as within it, through the time and energy offered by a host of volunteers. Much of this work is invisible, but crucial not only to the stability and smooth operation of the parish, but to the joy and comfort of the church community as a whole.

  Community Outreach Opportunities

TRINITY'S OUTREACH PROGRAM HAS DEEP ROOTS    Trinity's commitment to the local community is as old as the 19th century, when parishioners helped establish Mission Hospital and Grace and St. Matthias Episcopal Churches - and as new as the summer of 2006 when Parish volunteers traveled to New Orleans to help communities rebuild from Hurricane Katrina.

In more recent times, Trinity has devoted a significant percentage of its annual operating budget to Outreach missions. Quietly but steadily, Parish volunteers have matched this financial commitment with hands-on participation as laborers, directors, board members, and logistical coordinators.

Some Parishioners have worked alone or in small teams, delivering Meals on Wheels to homebound families every week for years and years. Others have helped teach children to read, collected food for the Manna Food Bank, cooked meals for homeless women in our Room-at-the-Inn program, or served with ABCCM's many ministries.
On a number of glorious occasions Trinity parishioners have turned out in force for special projects. Forty volunteers once devoted a wintry weekend to renovating the old Helpmate Shelter for battered women when it was located in Montford. Other volunteers have teamed up to build wheel chair ramps and improve overall habitability for families striving to retain their homes under Mountain Housing Opportunities.

In the 1990s Trinity's Vestry purchased a house on Ravenscroft Drive adjoining our west parking lot with the intention of converting it into a fully licensed and state-certified shelter for runaway and homeless youths between the ages of 12 and 18. More than 100 volunteers worked for months to achieve the conversion. Trinity Place, now leased to Caring for Children, Inc., has provided safe shelter and wise counseling to several thousand local youngsters in the years since certification.

Of all its rewarding community commitments, Trinity has enjoyed a special relationship with Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity since 1989. There's just something about building a new home - literally raising the walls and the roof - for a needy and fully participating family. During the past 17 years Trinity has built more than a dozen new Habitat homes in this community - sometimes teamed with other downtown churches, sometimes by ourselves, and more recently in harness with the other Episcopal churches in the Asheville Deanery. In 2008, Trinity expects to participate in the building of the 25th Anniversary House with the other downtown churches, something for people of any skill level to do to help.

All of these worthy projects and many more are coordinated by Trinity's Outreach Committee, chaired by Susan Haldane (phone 298-7379), which meets often at the home of Mary Parker, an original member of the group, at 95 Charlotte Street.
